Patio installation with pergola and fire pit

Patio Installation

Unilock Pavers ~$26,000 Completed 2020
Material: Unilock pavers
Existing Conditions: Grass and gravel
Soil Type: Gravel
Drainage: Slope patio away from old stone foundation
Access: Machine OK, truck access limited
Weather: Mild

This project involved converting a grass-covered area into a Unilock paver patio with a pergola and stone fire pit. Work included full excavation and installation of subbase material. Footings were installed for the pergola, followed by the laying of Unilock pavers with a decorative border. The surrounding area was restored to lawn with grass seed. The key challenge was incorporating the old stone foundation, which was capped with natural blue stone to create a seamless, attractive transition.

Plant Installation

Native Plantings ~$13,000 Completed 2023
Material: Native, less-maintenance planting
Existing Conditions: Overgrown, outdated plant material
Soil Type: Clay
Drainage: Graded new landscape bed to shed water away from house
Access: Machine OK, truck OK
Weather: Early spring

The landscape installation began with clearing the area of old plant material and roots, then cultivating and loosening the soil, and adding compost and other treatments to prepare the ground for planting. A variety of new flowering shrubs and perennial flowers were planted, along with a notable 15-gallon weeping redbud ornamental tree. Following planting, a drip irrigation system was put in place to guarantee adequate watering. To finish, heavy landscape fabric was applied to the open ground, a paver edge border was installed to separate the lawn and landscape bed, and brown native mulch was laid down. We also installed 4-inch river rock from the foundation to the house drip line to ensure no moisture near the house.

Alan Block ~$8,000 Completed 2023
Material: Alan Block
Existing Conditions: Existing retaining wall failing
Soil Type: Bank run gravel
Topography: Minor grading
Access: Machine OK, truck OK
Weather: Late fall

This landscape renovation project began with the demolition of the existing failing retaining wall and removal of old materials. A new curved Alan Block retaining wall was constructed with proper base preparation and backfill. Fresh mulch beds were installed along the wall with new plantings, and the surrounding area was graded and restored.

Paver Walkway Installation

Unilock Pavers ~$7,200 Completed 2022
Material: Unilock pavers
Existing Conditions: Walkway in disrepair
Soil Type: Clay
Drainage: High spots around existing walkway
Access: Machine OK, truck access limited
Weather: Expected rain

Our project team undertook the restoration of an existing paver walkway that was in disrepair. The initial phase involved removing the existing pavers, digging out the native soil, and installing a proper base for the new pavers, which included adjusting the grade around the walkway for optimal drainage. Where the walkway met the blacktop driveway, a precise vertical edge was cut to create a smooth and visually appealing transition. After laying the new pavers, a charcoal border with polymer sand was added. The project concluded with fine grading of the surrounding lawn area, installation of grass seed, and application of two coats of sealer. Working late was necessary to complete the grading ahead of predicted rain.
